Bill Tai

Bill is a member of the Board of Managers and a Director of the Illinois Emerging Technologies Fund. Bill is a partner at Charles River Ventures (CRV) and leads the West Coast practice. Bill joined CRV in 2002 from Institutional Venture Partners (IVP). He has 16 years of experience as a venture capitalist and has had over 20 companies become publicly listed and or be acquired. His portfolio of early stage projects spans web services, communications systems, and enabling technologies. In 2005, he was named by Forbes to their list of “Top 100 dealmakers in Technology.” Bill represents CRV on the board of MAXTHON, a ‘web 2.0’ browser company with over 180 Million downloads to date and is an angel investor in VideoEgg. His CRV portfolio also includes Avvenu, Nantero, Rosum and WangYou Media among other companies. He is also on the board of public companies Microtune (Nasdaq: TUNE) and Transmeta (Nasdaq: TMTA) and serves as an outside director of TRADEBEAM, a company he founded. Prior to his career in venture capital, Bill established the semiconductor practice at Alex Brown and Sons where he positioned public offerings for Adaptec, Atmel, Cirrus Logic, Dallas Semiconductor, Exar, and Zilog among others. Previously he held technical and marketing positions with LSI Logic. Bill holds a BS with Honors, in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois and an MBA from Harvard Graduate School of Business. He is a past Officer and Director of the Association of Venture Capitalists. In his free time, Bill enjoys spending time with his family or kitesurfing.
