“A Growing Presence on the Farm: Robots” EarthSense Featured in New York Times

EarthSense, an Illinois Ventures company based in Urbana-Champaign, was featured in a New York Times article about their autonomous robot, TerraSentia. The nimble farmbot improves the quantity, accuracy, cost, and speed of in-field plant trait data collection, especially for under-canopy traits that cannot be obtained by other technologies.

“The TerraSentia is among the smallest of the farmbots available today,” the article notes. “At 12.5 inches wide and roughly the same height, the 30-pound robot fits well between rows of various crops. It also focuses on gathering data from much earlier in the agricultural pipeline: The research plots where plant breeders select the varieties that ultimately make it to market.”

As the demand for agriculture and agtech increases with the world’s population, technologies like the TerraSentia will prove key to smart and profitable farming. EarthSense continues to work on speed and agility enhancements to the technology to keep up with this demand.
