Newsweek names Psyonic founder one of “America’s Greatest Disruptors”

On Wednesday, Newsweek published a special edition: “America's Greatest Disruptors: Medical Marvels,” to highlight the fifty people who are most successfully “pushing the technological boundaries of health care.” Included in that list was Psyonic founder and CEO, Dr. Aadeel Akhtar.

Newsweek’s profile of Aadeel explains why Psyonic’s approach to bionic limbs is a game changer for many of the estimated 1.6 million Americans who live with the loss of one or more limbs. According to Aadeel, bionic limbs have historically been unaffordable for all but 10% of Americans who would benefit from having them.

Using innovative manufacturing techniques, including 3D printing, the Psyonic team has been able to not only improve prosthetic limbs’ quality, but also to dramatically reduce their cost. Psyonic’s first product, the Ability Hand, is priced at just $10,000 to $20,000; similar-quality prosthetic limbs have historically carried price tags as high as $70,000.

Thanks to Psyonic’s success in reducing costs, Medicare has pledged to cover the company’s prosthetics. Psyonic’s low prices - and Medicare’s decision to cover the company’s prosthetics - may soon expand the segment of patients who can afford bionic limbs to as high as 75%.

Congratulations, Aadeel, for your well-deserved recognition from Newsweek! We’re proud to support you and the whole Psyonic team.
